If you’re looking for a short, but challenging trail, then Pumpkin Rock Trail is perfect for you!
A Summary of our hike to Pumpkin Rock
This trail is difficult due to the constant incline the entire way up. Once at the base of the hill, it becomes pretty steep until you reach the top. You’ll need to use your hands to help climb up the rocky dirt slope. If you’re hiking with little ones, have them right in front of you so you can help push them up and they don’t fall backwards. It is definitely doable, my kids were 4, 5, and 8 at the time and we made it. Slow and steady for the win! Safety first and remember it is not a race.

Once at the top you’ll be rewarded with the majestic pumpkin rock. (There is a wooden plaque that you can take a picture with) feel free to rest on a rock, take in the views and drink water. Even my mom made it to the top and she does not like heights and steep hills.
This is the way
There are multiple trails that lead to Pumpkin Rock. The trail I’ll be sharing with you has street parking and is next to a parking lot with a playground and restrooms.
The trailhead begins near the equestrian center which is also located next to the animal shelter. You will see the dirt path and a trail marker as you approach.
Once you start, you will have an option to go up the hill using the trail that goes beyond this USA sign or take the trail to the right that takes you past horse statues. You can always loop back the way you came or take the second trail on your way back down.

Now once you have made it to the pumpkin rock and it is time for you to descend, please do so carefully. I taught my kids to lean backwards when hiking downhill, knees bent slightly for balance and to get a secure footing before proceeding down. It helps to turn your body at a slight angle for better footing. Another option is to sit and scoot down which is what two of my littles did. There is no shame in being safe.
Our Thoughts
One of the more difficult hikes we have done due to the uphill climb, but we made it, and it was worth it! The giant Pumpkin Rock at the top of the hill was amazing to see up close and the views were awesome! With Pikes Peak Park next to the parking lot, this was a two-fer that was well worth the trip. We will be back for sure!
