If you are looking for a Long Beach Park or playground for your littles to explore, then you absolutely need to check out Recreation Park! It is dinosaur themed which makes the whole play experience even more exciting! From a t-rex to climb to digging in the sand for fossils, this playground does not disappoint.
Recreation Park is one of the best Long Beach Parks we have come across. Despite the sand, it really is an exciting playground. There are lots of climbing sets, slides, swings (including accessible swings) and plenty of space to run around.
I love that there is a walkway that goes through the playground with benches, so parents are able to sit and watch their kids from within the playground. The downside is there is no shade, so bring an umbrella or wear a hat because it does get hot. Thankfully there are trees around the playground for shade and some picnic tables to sit at. It would be a good idea to bring blankets or chairs just in case the picnic tables are taken. (It tends to fill up on the weekend when it’s busiest)
My kids’ favorite part is the disc swing that goes around in circles. It is really neat! You will definitely get your workout in, pulling and pushing the kids around on that. We love this Long Beach park and go often. We hope you enjoy it too!
Address: (there is no exact address for this park, so below is the dropped pin location of where it is located)
749–829 Federation Dr
Long Beach, CA 90804
United States
Parking: There is a parking lot, but spaces tend to fill up quickly on the weekend. The only entrance to the parking lot is heading west bound on Seventh St and turning onto Federation Dr.
Restrooms: Yes! They are your typical public restrooms but at least there are some available. It is located a short walk from the playground, heading towards the corner of Seventh St. and Park Ave.
Picnic Tables: Yes. There are a few picnic tables near the playground.
Enclosed? No, the playground is not enclosed. It is located far enough from the street, but if you have a runner, I suggest keeping a close eye on them.
Sand?: Yes. There is sand. Not my favorite. It’s rough, irritating, and it gets everywhere….Star Wars nerd here and hopefully you caught that reference. But in all seriousness, how else will your kids dig for fossils??
Stroller friendly?: Yes. Unless your stroller has magic wheels that glide effortlessly over sand (please share if you do) There is a walkway that runs through the playground for easy access.
Shade?: No. There are benches for parents to sit within the playground but unfortunately, there is no shade covering these benches. Who designed this?? I wish I knew, but make sure to bring those hats, sunscreen, and umbrella, if you fancy that. There are some trees surrounding the playground area but nothing that really shades the playground itself.
Accessibility: Yep! There is a walkway from the parking lot that goes to the playground. There are no ramps to the play equipment but there is an accessible swing and a parent/child swing.
